It was a slightly colder temperature than -51 when I was much younger when I decided to stay inside and call some hotter US states for travel information. I remember chatting quite a while to a lady in Texas who was super fascinated with the low Canadian temperature. She learned a little about Canada(!) that day and so did her friends & family. She was going to tell them all about it! lol  
 
That was a fun thing to do on such a cold day!

Explained to a friend in Texas, they are afraid of freezing to death, that the difference in temps from there to here is 99 degrees F.

If you are using red nose and have remote start please start you car so it it warm for you and the volunteers.

Block heater quit on the truck a while back, so if it going to get to extremes I go out and start it at around one. Although the moon wasn't quite full it was a great night to take a short walk while the truck warmed up. It was windy enough that one could hear the wind in the branches and also it was swirling the exhaust from the truck, so there was a bit of a breeze.  
Maybe it's just fargobob and I who appreciate this weather, or maybe nights like this, you can go for a walk, and you can fill your lungs with great air, and with myself I can come in and sleep like a baby. So goodnight all, but I'm waiting for another night tomorrow.

For myself I'll stop short of saying this morning would be my choice of weather, but usually try to look at our temp extremes as helping make us as resilient of folk as you'll find.  
 
That and the comments about Texas remind me of a couple thoughts from our time in Hawaii earlier this month. Of course went in knowing it would be warm but what was a bit of an eye opener was the only few degree difference between their average high temperature and their record high temp for our days there. Compare that with here where our record for today is +2, average is -12. Had a good chat with a local who told us about the time they experienced Canadian cold on a trip to...... Vancouver. I had to enlighten them that if they want the full experience they'll have to keep going East next time  
 
Noticed a great little post by local painter Weiming Zhao yesterday. It turns out this kind of weather isn't the worst thing for his craft...

Cold Vancouver...rofl! That is the Canadian tropical destination.

Its funny... when we were in Southern California last we chatted with a couple from that area that were looking forward to their family escaping to Hawaii for a warm holiday. In Hawaii earlier this month one of the shop-keepers was about to shut down for a few days to take a holiday in LA and have some excitement after the isolation of living in Hawaii. Meanwhile up here we're not too picky and will take either one  
 
On our last trip to Vancouver Island we had an exchange with a fellow that moved to that area from Southern Manitoba that had regret about his move and missed all of the sunshine back here in the winter. We like to gripe about the weather here but its seems nowhere’s perfect and at some point its about what you make with what you have (with the odd holiday refresher sprinkled in for good measure )!

When it is this cold, it is usually very clear... "clear and cold"... which is awesome for solar production. We installed a big ground mount system on our acreage just outside of Brandon this year and we are getting great production on days like today so wanted to share another positive...!!! I added a couple of photos of how much power we had produced already today at lunch time (from my real-time app) as well as a picture of our setup when it was a little warmer out!

Right now in Parksville it is 2C. It was -6 and frosty with the snow remaining for two weeks...imagine! They used to joke about snow here saying "there is only ONE snow plow for the whole island". In other words, wait a day or two and the rain will take care of it.  
 
Today it's back to sun. It's rare to see that warm ball in the sky from Nov - March but when it happens its a treat, Adam!  
 
We got snow last night and that too is rare sight, but many kids (and adults) take advantage of outdoor activities. However people don't know how to drive in the wet snow and when it goes below 0c, well look out!  
 
We X-Manitobans can teach them a few tricks!

Because I'm older I'm going to say that it used to be colder when they said the windchill was going to be -45, or minus anything regarding windchill. In my mind I thought it was just a few years ago that they made the changes, but no one else seemed to remember what I was talking about, but did a bit of searching and found out the changes were made way back in 2001. Before that time windchill factors of minus 50 seemed to be unhear of or that's the way I remember it, and if they said a windchill of -43 seemed incredibly cold, now days -43 stops the school system and yet it is the kind of day that one can carry on work outside.

Sort of wondering if anyone else considers today's -43 not as cold as -43 used to be.

Friend of mine runs a cat shelter. There are more feral cats than there are pets.
