I don't know about any of you, but with the rain this weekend I had the passing thought that "at least it's not snow". Ha ha ha!!  
 
I was telling my 88-year-old grandmother about the squirrel who is single-handedly (single-pawed?) trying to clean up the copious amount of pine cones in our front yard. Very busy he's been (and an absurd amount of pine cones). My grandmother commented that "the old folks" would say that means a hard winter is coming.  
 
Ember Days happened last week (Sept 18, 20 & 21), and they are supposed to predict the weather for October, November and December respectively. According to this prediction, it will be a warm and lovely October, followed by VERY wet/snowy November & December.  
 
What have you noticed in the Old Wives' Tales and Folk Predictions for winter weather?

Six weeks after the last thunderstorm in September will be the first day of snow. That would mean our first snow will be on November 1. Wait and see if it's right.

The wasps were actually late this year - usually by mid-August we're dealing with them dining outside and camping. This year, however, we were at the end of August before it was really an issue.  
 
But they do seem to be very intense. And there's LOTS, more than usual. Once we have a good frost (maybe Friday night) they should subside.

Wasps are on the list.  
 
I know they are a part of nature, but still . . . I'll take mosquitos over wasps any day! At least they don't attack me when all I want to do is throw out some garbage. And heaven help you if it's a commercial bin filled with meat and bakery stuff . . .  
 
I once pitched in an item only to disturb a cloud of wasps. THAT, was some scary s***.

Two things I have noticed this fall: 1st: any deer fawns that I have seen lately do not have very many spots left. That is a supposedly a sign of an early winter. 2nd: the black and orange caterpillars you see in the fall have more black than orange on them this year, which we were told, means a colder than normal winter.

I am terrified of wasps, and I agree that they have been so incredibly intense this august/sept. I actually fear unloading my groceries from my cart to my car, they seem more aggressive than normal. On a different note, I have no old wives tales to share, but I have a feeling this winter is going to be a hard one, does that count? Lol

I counts, IMO. I think we notice patterns subconsciously year after year, and sometimes get a "gut" feeling based on those patterns.  
 
Interesting to note, the previous set of Ember Days back in June that is supposed to predict July, August and September indicated a very wet September. I see in the forecast starting Wednesday, it's rain every day in the foreseeable future (up to Sept 30).
