you can't cancel your travel plans. Especially if it's a medical or flight. Also the weather is very fluid and forecasters right up to the day that the storm hits makes adjustments because the storm has changed path and intensity.

This isn’t a comment to put the weather forecasters down but more with the reality of weather forecasting. There are a great number of variables that have to be taken into account in forecasting, and the track of a storm or precipitation amount can increase or decrease hourly. So when I take that into deciding on heading out, I will take a gamble.

I found that the older I got, the less necessary those out of town trips became.  
 
When I was younger and fearless (also more selfish) I would put myself in harm's way more often than I do now.

The forecast this week-end indicated snow, freezing rain etc - possibly a major storm. If I listened to that, I wouldn’t have driven the 400 km to Winnipeg. I woke up this morning and while there was a bit of ice, it was driveable. As time and road salt wore on, and with no real additional precipitation, the drive was a piece of cake. The moisture actually seems to have mostly disappeared for tomorrow for Winnipeg.
