Rice is for eating.

I repair phones so I am not just stating this as a flippant remark. An urban myth of sorts that make us in the repair community smile. The reason it seems to work is that one is leaving the phone to dry out, which it would with rice or no rice. The proper way to deal with this situation is to dismantle the phone to circuit board level, microscope inspection, run it through an ultrasonic sweep cleaner and pray. At the very least, one should dismantle the phone as much as possible, soak PCB in 99% alcohol for 10 to 15 minutes and then scrub lightly with a toothbrush. In all cases, let the phone dry for at least a couple of days, preferably dismantled. For most techs who repair phones, it is common practice to only repair wet phones for the sake of data recovery and not for a functional phone. I'm not saying phones that have been wet will not work but there is a good chance that at a later point, corrosion can cause a short in the circuit. If and when I repair a water damaged phone I do not warranty the repair.
