I noticed yesterday when I was checking out a couple things at Walmart that they had cameras on the check out and on the screen was me checking out my items. Just curious if this has been there a long time and I've been in lalaland or is this a new thing?  
I know the purpose of them is probably to prevent theft which is smart on their part but it was a little creepy to me. Personal issue, I know.

Chances are you never noticed. And if they are new it is probably for those pretending to scan items and trying to get away with it. I have noticed everywhere you shop there are cameras. Doesn't matter which store. You are watched all the time. When theft is a multi million dollar industry everyone tries to protect themselves.

All the big stores stores have cameras watching YOU, the self check out has a few measures to detect theft,video evidence only makes sense,the honor system wouldn't be wise for any business.

I love the self check out, but I can see why they would add the cameras. I read an article from the U.S and it said something like $850,000 of products left the store without being paid for in one study. https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2018/03/stealing-from-self-checkout/550940/

I have no issues with the cameras and I understand that theft is a major problem. I just meant it's creepy watching yourself, that's all. Not debating the rights and wrongs of cameras, just didn't realize they had those cameras here!

creepy .... is definitely over used. I don''t see what so "creepy" about being monitored via camera in places where the is NOT a reasonable expectation of privacy.  
 
Personally I think it's a great proactive approach to have them! What if you were accused of stealing items at the self-checkout.. but had not...wouldn't it be nice to have video evidence to prove your innocence? Nothing creepy about that!

the better, I dont like big brother looking over my shoulder any more than any one else, but i would sooner have big brother helping to reduce shop lifting, cause i dont want to pay more for my stuff cause someone else felt it was ok to shop lift and get away with it.

are fairly new to the self-serve checkouts. I first noticed them a couple months ago.

I first noticed these cameras a couple weekends ago when we were in Minot. I haven’t been to the Walmart in Brandon in a long time so I didn’t know we had them too. I think it’s a good idea tho!

I imagine a lot of things go unscanned because items get missed on the bottom of the cart. I wonder why they don’t have mirrors on the till area across so that the cashier could easily see if something was there?

The small camera monitors at the self checkouts were implemented two weeks ago. Made a couple funny faces at myself in the monitor today, gotta get my kicks somehow lol

Hypocrites.  
I can pretty much guarantee that at some point in your lives you've: Used an ATM, pumped your own gas, gotten take out in a place that delivers, used an online medium for free for information on local events (wink wink), streamed videos, or even used a big box retailer when you could have bought local.  
I bet none of those things bothered you though did they?

I actually enjoy the self check out. Sometimes cashiers will scan an item twice without realizing, and you end up playing paying twice for it. Self check out ensures I scan my own items, I know the price of each item is correct, and only get scanned once. I also like that I’m not harassed in getting one of their credit cards

I use auto checkouts at times, usually a factor to beat long line ups, but I''m the guy that''s not going to cost a lot of jobs. I''m the guy that stands in front of the machine completely confused (maybe not) and shortly some one comes to show me how to use the machine, and runs my products through. I look at it as a win win situation.  
May should not go here, but when talking of walmart we are talking of a company that has served our need for cheaper service and products without a care about jobs in any sector, it's all about the money from both sides.

I believe they’re relatively new. I understand why though. I enjoy self check out at high traffic times and I don’t want to wait x amount of time in a line when I only have one or two items. The self check out line is usually pretty minimal or next to no one in it.

Can’t stand them. Won’t use them.  
I will walk away if no other tills opened

love the convenience of self checkouts.  
 
Embrace them people, because they are here to stay & projections show that in the next 10-20 years they will become a permanent fixture in many large box stores.

Now what do those things have to do with it you ask? Those things all conform to the loss of jobs by automation. Complaining about one while willingly using others because they suit you makes you a hypocrite.

" Calling people you dont know hypocrites was still rude and uncalled for, there ar other ways to talk to people/make a point without being rude lol Watching videos, using a atm, using a grocery store (that some local famers do have their produce in like CooP), having food delivered by a driver and paying cash etc still has nothing to do with choosing to not use self checkouts... its not about complaining its a different view, a diff opiniion of something, choosing as a individual to not use something for a reason. If someone chooses one day to use a self gas pump and other day chooses to use someone pump the gas for him does that make him a hypocrite? No. "

It totally makes them a hypocrite if they complain about the idea of someone losing a job in one sector while not caring about job loses in others. Which was pretty much the point of my post, which is literally what a hypocrite is.

By the way there''s employees working in every self-checkout I''ve ever used so that argument about losing jobs while also hypocrisy is also wrong.

The mention of ATM and such is just a highlight against your post. Self Checkers take away a cashier job according to your view/opinion. An ATM is just a bank's self checkout. You bypass a teller. I use restaurants websites such as Pizza Express. I just bypassed the server answering the phone. I used basically their self checkout. So if one is to say they hate self checkouts and prefer a human cashier and then go to an ATM or use Skip the Dishes and have food delivered to them....well then yes they would hypocrites. Nothing you use would or should be automated then as it takes away a job. Lol.

I don't like using self check outs for the fact they don't take cash. Quite often I will run in for a couple of things and I am not using my bank card for something under $10.

" you had butter on your popcorn   Im not the only one on the thread who chooses not to use self checkout machines (for which ever reasons),... Alot of people use a combo of atm/cashier, selfserve gas/gas-attnedant, online ordering pizzs/pay cash to the deliver driver after talking to customer service on the phone, doesnt make people hypocrites if they choose to use or not use either one for whatever reasons, including self checkout machines at walmart. Again, people who use both isn't what we're talking about, those people usually aren't the ones complaining about x taking away from y, because they frequent x and y.  
The whole entire point of my original post is that people who complain about selfcheck outs taking jobs while using other methods of automation are hypocrites.  
It has nothing to do with opinions, or reasons, or personal choices, or safe places, or needing hugs, or what colour pants you wear. Using something that's automated while complaining about other automation makes you a hypocrite. Period.  
Yes Shebear this i:ncludes you whether you like it or not, having the "opinion" that one automated job is okay while another is not is hypocritical.

If you choose to not use a self checkout at Wal-Mart because the beep scares you, but you have no phobia about pumping your own gas-great. Yes, people have various reasons for using or not using a particular self service feature and some can use one and not another without being hypocrites.  
 
However-some have stated they object to self checkout because it takes away a job for someone-if that is you then yes, it is hypocritical to use an ATM or the self serve gas pump. Those things take away a job just as much as the self checkout at Walmart. If you refuse to use one for that particular reason (taking away a job) then you should refuse to use any self serve feature.  
 
Me? I happily use them all-self checkouts? I love those. ATMs are okay. So are the self serve gas pumps...in summer.

Cameras are here to stay in this day and age.  
Having seen everything from people with full carts attempting to make a run for it, to a years-long regular shopper stuffing a bag with meat (in a shopping basket), you can't be too careful.  
 
If its thieved or unnecessarily written off (leaving frozen or cooler items just anywhere!), we all pay.  
 
Not that posting it here will do much. It just annoys me.

As for the self-checkout. . . it's the way of the future. May as well get used to it.  
 
I don't mind them, in all honesty. I'm not sure if it's faster, but it generally doesn't involve much of a line.  
 
The only issue I have with them is with store that tags their meat and cheese products with anti-theft strips.
