Then why is Transit closed for July 1st but open July 2nd then? Need service to get to do things when things open but cabs are too expensive.

Next year, Canada day will be on the Monday. So if the city was going to shut down transit (which I don't think they should - but that is a different discussion), it would be on the holiday, Monday July 1, 2019. As for this year, they probably didn't realise this year was different than normal.
