Holiday season seems to either bring out the best or the worst in people.  
 
I like to remind myself how lucky I am when I approached for spare change.. I can’t imagine being so destitute that I would approach strangers for help. I also would hate being afraid for my life simply because someone asked me to help. I give if I have extra change and I have done so for almost 50 years and when I say I don’t have anything I have never been attacked.

what a fun prank to get some different types of oils and 20 boxes of condoms, underwears, 2 toilet plungers and pack of bungee straps, and a bunch of rope. Run 30 items though at max volume...  
 
then say out loud, "crap, I forgot my wallet", and exit stage left.  
ok, that's just me pulling the usual harmless public stunt. Oh, and make sure someone records it for Youtube.

This post made me rethink my Friday night shopping that I had planned. As a female, I have shopped at walmart in the evening and been very paranoid that someone was following me out, only to have it turn out to just be someone walking to their car in the same area as me. But you just never know!  
 
Also, on the case of panhandlers in the corral centre, don't give anything to the ones with signs along the stop lights. Quite often there are people there that I know who are not homeless they are just scamming you!!

So, if I go in and buy a TV and a gaming system, am I really concerned with what a machine says?? I'm pretty sure most people could hazard a guess that they're expensive items. It's not like my items are hidden inside of some crate or anything...anyone can see what I'm purchasing at any given time...my purchases aren't really a big secret or anything.

Winnipeg drives me nuts. Portage and Broadway I had some guy with a dirty window squeegee and kept telling him no over and over. The a-hole took his squeegee and whacked my truck with it. I was pissed, went to get out but my wife stopped me and the jerk took off running. Days like that I wish it was legal to shoot paint gun balls....frozen.

Well funny thing with self checkouts. They have a volume button on them. You can select how loud you want it or you can mute them all together. And they just say the price not the item themself

I am sorry but I do not have spare money to hand out. Especially when they are wearing better clothes than me.  
 
I try to walk away and not say anything when approached but on more than one occasion I have been grabbed or called a white B***ch so excuse me if I am intimidated.  
 
No Comment I would love to see you at the check out. That is hilarious. Sort of reminds me of the guy with a big bag of dog food and someone asked him if he had a big dog and said nope on new diet and lost 50 lbs on it.

Really, panhandlers are on the boulevards, in bank vestibules, in actual stores at times now. I believe the Meth crisis is insane in the city now. I am a @itch, I've dealt with some very aggressive panhandlers. Grow some thick skin. You can also report it to customer service, or to the manager of the store, bank, etc. You can't fix a problem, or RID of parasites, if there is no knowledge of a problem.

say they both have a point from what I'm reading here, it may be written bluntly though. I'd like to see where the whole discussion was to see why these posts were made.  
 
I'm going to say lots of times the Media whether news papers or TV news types, is mushroom farming us. " we're kept in the dark and fed c#@p". As they only tell us what fits the agenda or "Narrative" as it now seems to be called.  
 
Look whats happening with $600 million of our money to "trusted" news sources for the next election. Basically JT is paying them to say what he wants, and anything else will not be printed, as they won't get paid that money. The taxpayer funded CBC is already a good example!  
 
As for fishing guys comment, How many more guys would of got mad, if they told a guy they didn't want him touching their vehicle. Especially smearing a mess all over the window for money. Then the guy hit the side of it with something that could cause a nasty dent/damage.  
 
This is the whole problem these days some people don't listen to others and have no respect. Lots of us would expect to get a negative response of some kind to that situation.  
 
Is shooting a guy with a frozen paint ball harsh yes, but i'd bet he'd sure learn quick not to do it again when he was told not to. A lesson lots of us learned from one or both parents if we misbehaved or didn't listen, we didn't do it again.  
 
Maybe the guy had Mental health issues which should be addressed by professionals and proper carers in the community to help him , we don't know that either to be fair in his defense.. There is a lot of this world is messed up logic, and a lot of people who defend it as being "right" in their eyes, just look at Antifa and some of those other morons..

Truth be known, there are people who hang out by snowmobile/4-wheeler/truck stores, find out who has just purchased a new one, and track them to their place of residence. They then steal it. This has been a reality in rural areas for years.  
 
We don't want to hear things like this, or aggressive panhandlers, but they exist, and we should have the information we need to keep us safe. This doesn't mean that we are painting ALL panhandlers with the same brush: there are good people and there are a%*holes. People down on their luck (especially if they have a drug habit - meth is rampant now, and believe me, if you're chasing a high and sleep-deprived, you will do things that you wouldn't even dream of doing sober) will do desperate things.  
 
It's not nice to hear about it, but it exists. As for the OP, I agree - if there was some way of muting the self-checkout, it would be much safer.

Not that I have issues, I've lived in Wpg for ages and had to deal with aggressive panhandlers and of course the squeegee boys. You tell them no and they get in your face calling you names, racial slurs, gender slurs, so on and so on. Mean while your young child is scared and crying and you have no way out as your stuck in traffic. When your a male and say no they tend to back off. They get pushier towards women thinking they will back down and hand out the free cash just to get rid of them. So yes maybe I do have issues...with my wellbeing and safety of my family. Jus sayin.

eBrandoners will look for every opportunity to bash self checkout, won't they. This whole thread is grasping at straws. Automation is the future, might as well get used to it now cause it sure ain't changing back anytime soon. As far as "panhandlers" bother you, they will bug you regardless of how loud a checkout announces your bill. If someone walks out of a store with a handful of bags, they obviously spent some money. This thread is disguised as a problem thread when in reality all it is is an excuse for everyone to talk down about homeless people and self checkouts. There is so many bigger issues in the world we could focus on, why this?

We don’t know their story. Baby it’s cold outside & if my loonie or toonie buys you some kind of comfort it’s earning me good karma. Win win situation. Most of the panhandlers I have given a little to are so very grateful. A loonie buys me a smile, a bless you & a happy holidays! More than you get from the Salvation Army people......
