Where can you go, in the Westman area, to buy a sewing machine from a knowledgeable person (not a box store)?  
 
What sewing machine or brand do you recommend and why?

Absolutely I would recommend Brandon Sewing Centre . Awesome to deal with , friendly and excellent after sales service.  
We got a Pfaff but there are other good brands that they sell and he will advise according to your budget and expected use, very professional.

Another vote for Brandon Sewing Center. I bought my Husqvarna there, and love it. But like George said, they are very knowledgeable and will suggest machines based on your use and budget.

Another vote for Brandon Sewing. I bought a refurbished Singer there quite a number of years ago. Soviet-era Polish made. Thing is a tank. The guy was super-helpful helping me pick it out. He usually has a selection of refurbished machines if you're looking for something on a budget.

Fabricland has a wide selection of fabric types. However, it can be pricey, so think about buying a membership. It's good for a year: gives good discounts: is only $20 + taxes and is good at all Fabriclands from MB to BC.
