TV Purchase Advice

Looking to purchase a TV for a basement 'theatre' room. Want to spend no more than $2000. Any advice? LCD versus Plasma? Brand? Size? (thinking of a 50/52 inch). Will be used for kids gaming and watching movies and TV (mostly hockey if my husband and son get their way!) What should I look for and where is the best place to shop?
