I just heard an interview on CBC with the owner of Prairie Firehouse about The Local Frequency coming to Brandon! It's basically a loyalty program where you earn between 1-3% back by buying at participating local/independent businesses. There looks like there's also "premium offers", for example some local places are offering 20-25% back right now.  
 
It started out in Winnipeg, and it looks like you can use the same card/app in both cities. The loyalty dollars can be used at any participating businesses, from what I understand.  
 
It also looks like you can just outright buy a gift card and it can be used at the participating businesses, which might be handy for those hard-to-buy people for Christmas (there's lots of restaurants on there).  
 
They just started and have 18 Brandon businesses signed up so far.  
 
I think this is very cool! I'm definately going to try it out!

Very cool idea. Over the last couple years we've moved towards buying just about everything with our credit card so that we can pocket the rewards. I like that as far as I can tell I can essentially get another 1% back by using this on top of that.  
 
A nice start with some of the local restaurants and service businesses that I saw on the list. The only constructive idea I hope they do is add a filter in the "businesses" section that lets you by default just show Brandon businesses if you live in Brandon (or give you "nearby" recommendations based on your location). Right now it shows just a big list of Brandon and Winnipeg combined together and you have to go to the "Map" tab to see Brandon stuff separated. Also hope that when they send out a notification about new businesses coming on board that I only get Brandon ones and not Winnipeg ones. But overall an intriguing start and something I'll be giving a shot!

It is my understanding that they'll be adding the filter option with the next version being released soon.

Just wanted to let you know that the next release of the app will have a "regions" feature that will let you filter the way that was mentioned in an earlier comment. That should be out in early January!
