I have a friend who is planning on building a detached garage behind the house. The access is from the front of the house via 9 foot wide driveway that runs up the side of the house to the back corner. The garage door is going to be 9 feet wide and offset from the property line by 5 1/2 feet. How far back from the house does he have to put the garage?  
 
Sounds like a question from grade school, haha!  
But hoping eBrandoners will step up to the plate and answer our question.

I would assume your friend has applied for a permit? There would be no questions left unanswered after that.

talk to the city. also. a 9 ft garage isn't wide enough for easy access to your car. need at leas a 10 to 12 ft wide garage.

I just wondered if anyone knew how to calculate the minimum distance the garage needs to be so you can drive the car in and out without hitting the house.

That's what I understood. That they will drive past the house and the do a shift over behind the house and into the garage.

We are wondering if it is even possible to put a garage there. Have a good 60 feet behind the house. 25 ft???? Really???

Next question, is the garage going to right behind the house, or off to the side so it’s a fairly straight shot to the garage?

Try it. Mark the proposed location out with pylons or something that won't damage your car if you hit it, and see what works. If the garage location isn't accessible, mark it out in a parking lot. Actual dimension depends on the vehicle(s), driver(s)'s skill, etc.

You are going to get all kids of info here.  
Save yourself some trouble and go to the city.all of your questions will be answered and you will also get a list of rules.you can draw up a plan of what you want to do and they will tell you if you need to make any changes.

Go draw it out of what to propose. Then take that to the planning department and talk with the local inspector. They are the one who will approve the design.

if the question is how close the front of the garage can be to the house which partially blocks access to the garage, I don't think the city will have any input. Planning bylaw tells you how close you can be to the property lines and other buildings, but you are looking for design advice which depends on your situation. You want to build your garage six feet from your house because your Smart Car will fit fine? Might have an impact on your resale. Best to confirm what you want to do with a model.

is how far from the property line? Is it just the 9 ft the width of the driveway? The average small car is 15 to 17 ft long. And remember about backing out of the garage also. (Without clipping off a mirror or scraping a fender.) HAHA

They can give you the guidelines to work with even before you start drawing up the garage plans. 60' between the house and rear property line is a lot of real estate so no problems there. I had to have 4' from the wall of my garage to the side property line. I don't remember exactly how much seperation I needed between the house and garage, but I have approx 12 feet. Fire regs also have some input, but again city planners should help. Again, with 60' of real estate you shouldn't have any issues unless there are other issues to deal with on the property: the wife's flower garden for instance.

But it still doesn’t tell you how much clearance you need for vehicles to safely move in and out by the house.

Honestly I thought this would be an easy question for someone out there. Seems to have generated a lot more discussion than I thought it would. Will let you know what I find out.

Does the person drive a Volkswagen bug, a big SUV or an F250? That makes a difference how much room is needed. Depends too if you want to go with what is needed now for a small car or maximum room so a large truck can fit in future.

That needs to be factored in as well.

No one says I wish I had built it smaller.  
 
I would recommend you put in a ten foot door. I know you said the driveway is only nine feet wide. Wider door is a marginal increase. A car mirror is significantly more. If you have to build less than 20 ft back of house you will need wiggle room.  
 
In terms of future potential resale you should see a positive return on your investment.

my truck is 20 ft long. if the garage is parallel with your house you need the backend 20 ft out of the garage before you can turn the wheel to go around the house. I would set the garage at a slight angle so you turn a bit and drive right in. I have seen this done many times and think it looks good. If you do that 15 ft is enough.

I never thought of that. We have lots of room to play with.  
This is one reason I like posting questions on eBrandon. You get different perspectives.
