We recently purchased a farm house and have noticed that the water is quite hard. Looking for suggestions on water systems that work well and have held up with minimal maintenance.

you should take a water sample to someone who understands softeners , i would start with a plumber that you know and trust ,.

I would talk to Phil at Blue Moon water. Highly knowledgeable with Water filtration. He will also recommend what is best in your case.  
 
Some systems are complex, some aren't. I live in town and got Phil to install my water softener. Made a huge difference. All I have to do is put softening salt in the reservoir and that is it. But like I said I live in town. If you have well water, then there will be a different system.

I second Phil.... he’s a plumber, specializes in water systems and is honest, knowledgeable, reasonably priced and just an all around good guy to work with. He won’t steer you wrong or sell you something you don’t need. You won’t be disappointed . Blue moon water is at 26th and Brandon Ave.

we have very very hard water and B & D Well Doctors Ltd. have been great. Our water is clear now and they've been very helpful when we've had questions or need help adjusting things.

Costco and some different places sell some nice systems. Just have to pay cost to hire plumber not a hard or timely job for them.
