Any ideas/suggestions on how to get the stuff shown in the picture (I assume some kind of moss, but it's hard) off of wood? I've tried sanding, scraping, and using a wire brush, but nothing seems to work as well as I think it should. There is no residual stain or paint on the wood, just this mossy stuff.

Do you happen to know if that works? I had Googled my question and found that, along with some other ideas.  
 
I'm open to all ideas, but hoping to see if anyone knows anything that definitely works, as I'm getting a little frustrated with trying and things not working.

Have you tried a pressure washer? Just make sure that you don’t bring it too close to the wood to damage the wood fibres.

I dealt with this last year on our cabin deck. I purchased a deck cleaner product (sorry don't remember the specific name) at Home Hardware (I do believe Home Depot, Canadian Tire carry similar products as well as paint stores). I painted it on a few boards at a time, had to reapply if it dried out. Then took a brush wish a handle (bought at dollar store) and literally scrubbed the deck). I tried a broom to scrub, but needed more pressure than than. A few places I had to reapply and probably this year need to re-do a few areas where the deck is stained dark from the moss. It was labor intensive and exhausting, but worked.

We ordered “30 Seconds” cleaner from Home Hardware to clean our camper last year. It works amazing. Would likely work for this as well. I just used it to get moss stains off vinyl siding.

It works on a number of issues!  
A wire brush will help loosen it after the solution is applied.
