How long does it take to get a building permit in Brandon. We are adding a 7 x 10 addition to our back door to have a porch/mudroom added to our house. The contractor we are hiring has taken the information and drawings to the City about 6 weeks ago and still nothing. Whenever we have talked to others about this they just laugh and say when did you want to start, next year? Or.... the guy with all the money in Brandon gets looked after first.  
I find this very disappointing when it really is a very small renovation. I phoned the city and they said that it is approved pending the engineer's report for tying the roof in. Would this be the contractor or one of the city's engineers?

Chances are if they are waiting on an engineers report for tying the roof in, it will usually mean the homeowner hiring an engineer to come and take a look at your existing trusses and write a letter and stamp it saying that the existing roof can hold the new. The stupid thing is it will probably be a small valley set that ties the new roof line to the side of your existing, it will be a non structural component which evenly distributes the loading over a wide area. Why they would need to know if the old roof can handle such a small tie in is beyond me. The city figures by having an engineers stamp on things it takes away their liability of the project.
