I was wondering what type of experiences people had with building a home in Brandon. If you could go back would you build or buy? How was the company to work with? Any unexpected costs? Shotty workmanship?

Building can be quite a challenge. Get a contractor with good references. Educate yourself. Profit margins on residential builds are slim so contractors tend to use low end materials and meet building codes at the low end. Often people make changes and upgrades during the building process that end up costing ++. A good contractor can make a world of difference. Lumber yards can be a good source to try for suggestions and talk to others who have been there for advice.

This time of year and the way this year is going you may be better off purchasing an already built home. Wood materials have skyrocketed and may cost more than something already pre built.

I think in the end it's better in the long run and possibly cheaper. the hard part is juggling finances. Builders mortgage you need 20% down and the cost of the lot is quite expensive which you can use as a down payment if you out rite own the land. Then there's the time it takes and decisions on what you want etc. where as if you buy an existing home you just go get a mortgage with 5% down and it's done.

I think building a home in Brandon could be a considerable headache unless you have the "right" people on your project that have the ability to navigate the terms and conditions as set out in local bylaws and overseen by Brandon Area and Planning.

sure, i tried to save a little bit of money by general contracting everything my self, got my quotes for all the big jobs , then came a nightmare . as i found you can get as many quotes as you want , but the lowest quote will never be nothing more than a headache ,as ifound out with my plumbing and heating guy,... ya what a complete imbicile. took a year and a half from start to finish.as far as permits for this , that and everything else, the city planning office doesnt care if you are getting shafted by one of your subtrades , you are on your own. buy one that is already built and move in and move on is my recommendation.
