Firewood, untreated wood, chemical free makes a great and enjoyable fire. But there are those who burn whatever is handy
like leftover fence posts. furniture, crates pallets ., leaves etc.
I think ( but not enough to do anything about it) that a neighbour was burning some furniture pieces including the stuffing and it is the cause of a partial ( hopefully not entire) die off...... on a tree downwind from their yard. Black smoke and stunk to high heaven.
I also saw the reference to the delegation to council regarding banning fire pits, in the Bdn Sun a week or two ago.
Hope it doesn't get banned but a few seem to spoil it for others more responsible.
When we got our fire pit permit a kazillion years ago, and up till the incident I referenced had no problems. Just thinking about a fire pit on a day like to day is ....wonderful!

There are rules to follow when applying for a fire pit. I looked it up and pasted below fyi:
“No unattended fires.
Fire exceeding the pit size.
If the fire, in our judgment, creates a special hazard.
Grass, rubbish, leaves, etc. cannot be burnt within City limits.
Pits are for recreational fires only.
Failure to obtain a permit.”
So if someone doesn’t have a permit or does but is using the fire pit incorrectly, then call the fire department to let them know. They will go out and check and make the person extinguish the fire if not being used properly. It’s pretty simple really.
