Roof Mount Powered Attic Ventilator

When we had our roof re-shingled in 2012, we had a Roof-Mount Powered Attic Ventilator installed. These are wired in and have a thermostat so when the attic gets above a certain temperature, the fan kicks in. The ventilator is no longer working and the motor is shot. The model is discontinued, has not been replaced with another option and there are no motors available. There might be a new ventilator unit available from another manufacturer soon. Driving around, we see very few of these on homes.
Interested in thoughts from other homeowners, roofers, electricians about these attic ventilators. Prior to 2012, there were no roof vents/ventilator in our attic (house built in 1993).
