wood burning stove and house insurance

How did your wood burning stove affect the cost of your insurance? The stove is being installed by a certified WETT professional just wondered what others experience was with your insurance companies?

Rates will depend on insurance provider. We heat exclusively with wood (WETT certified ) and pay a flat 25% over standard; non-certified would have been 50%. Another company I called for a quote refused a policy if we burned more than 3 cords per year.

I can't think of my insurance company at the moment but I'm not quite paying 20% more. It all depends on how much wood you want to burn. Of course how much wood you tell your insurance provider and how much you actually use can be 2 totally different numbers. Unless you like paying more money for insurance

You don't think that if you had a fire claim they might do a little bit of investigating and if they were to find out you lied on your policy that you would not be covered at all.

Some carriers won't provide insurance coverage if the wood stove is not certified. If WETT inspected some give a discount that lowers the wood heat surcharge.

The case! We have electric heat as we live in the country and the bills are almost making living here unaffordable. I doubt we would burn more than 3 cords of wood a year as it's just a supplemental heat source.

With wawanesa insurance, WETT wood stove is a 10% surcharge for auxiliary heat.

Wrong for you, maybe. We pay 25% and it's not auxiliary heat- as stated above, it's our main heat source. So maybe we're both right!

In any case, the easiest way to resolve this is for the OP to actually call their provider.

Sorry but if you're paying 25% then you don't have a WETT inspected wood heat. Or u need to speak with your broker.
