Are pipes are frozen How do u get them unfrozen?

Our shower drain used to freeze up in our cabin and our water pump in our garage would freeze up when it got cold. My husband used "Liqui-fire" to thaw them out. It comes in a plastic bottle and you can get it at Home Hardware. It was about $20.

I used to have an old stone house and had a vulnerable spot where the pipes ran along an outside wall coming up from the basement. I found if I banked snow against the wall at this spot it would be OK, until the wind would blow it away. When it got to -35 we sometimes had to leave a tap dripping upstairs.

We found leave the cupboard door open for warm air to come in. We also put flattened cardboard between the wall and the pipe. We would heat the pipe with the hand held hair dryer.
