Converting single bed into a loft bed

Has anyone here converted their kid's single bed into a loft bed so there's space underneath? My daughter's new room is quite small so i'd like to add some space. I know you can buy these beds but they're expensive. Does anyone know of anyone who has done it? if so, do you have any particular site to check or recommendations? obviously we want to do it right and be safe.
