I'm a single mom an sole custody holder of my child, I'm wondering if any one knows or if there is somewhere I can call to ask questions about travelling. Do i need the other parents permission to leave Canada if I have sole.custody. What papers would I need ?

You need permission. Years ago my sister in law was going state side and my brother was in the army overseas.. she was turned back

Although you have sole custody, you will still need written permission from the other parent to leave the country. You could attempt to travel without, but chances are you will need that written permission with you. Now, if the parent is not in the picture at all, might be different? I would contact a lawyer for advice if that is the case.

Try contacting CBSA with your questions as well. They are the ones that have to enforce the regulations.

I recently travelled to the U.S. with my 17 year old son. One of the first questions the U.S. customs officer ask was do you have his mother''''''''''''''''s permission to take him out of Canada. I had down loaded a form off the internet and had her and a witness sign it. I handed it over, he looked at it and we were on our way. I didn''''''''t use a lawyer. Now maybe if you can prove sole custody you don't need permission.

You don't need a LEGAL letter written by a lawyer or anything silly like that. I know that when my wife takes the mother in law and the boys to bottineau she gets me to write a note just in case but she has NEVER in 5 years been asked for it.  
 
We aren't divorced though, and if your husband is a dink you might want to get him to write a letter and sign it. When I write it I put my full name/birthday/details of the trip she's taking and give my phone number if they want to contact me to verify.

I’ve been separated for about a year or so now, and I took my daughter across the border and the officer didn’t ask for anything, even though I was armed with a letter signed by my future-ex-wife.
