Happy Monday everyone,  
 
I am trying to help my son with his Grade 9 math. I am not good at math at all. I read the instructions and still do not get it. I can not afford to get him a tutor so that is out. I am wondering if anyone knows of a good website that will help me when he has any questions about grade 9 math. I wonder if there is a website for grade 9 math for us parents. So, we can watch it and then be able to break it down easier for the kids to understand. I have told him to ask his teacher but I am not sure if he will. I know he is grade 9 and he needs to learn to be a big boy but I also do not need him failing math. I would like to be prepared so when he does come ask for help I can help instead of staying " no freakin idea".

What subject is he studying in Math right now? Is he having any difficulty with more basic math that is messing up his current understanding? An affordable series that can help him understand his math could be Life of Fred (there is a Manitoba supplier @ Carman). It has impressed me with how well it can stand alone and be so effective.  
 
My daughter, who is technically in grade 8 has used this all along and is now studying Trigonometry and enjoying it. I am lost, but she is certainly not!

Is it possible that he is getting hung up on the descriptive wording and needs them explaining in basic language with examples. From looking at the way the syllabus is written I can see that being a problem, more so if he has missed a lesson somewhere.  
I know I could never understand parts of math until by brother explained things in simpler terms.  
Perhaps talk to the teacher yourself about your concerns, they will appreciate your involvement and would never belittle your own knowledge. Each of us has our problem subjects we cannot all be Einstein's.

I have to second Khan Academy - there's a wide range of topics covered and is accessible for a variety of ages.  
 
Difficulties can often arise in math from not understanding foundational material. That being said, he may have to review more than just the topics currently being covered in class to gain a thorough understanding of the material.

At Vincent Massey there's a free program called "Peer tutoring". Done by volunteer students for free. Ask your son if his school provides the same program.  
 
Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

My son also struggles. I emailed the teacher a few times who had a few suggestions as well as offered to help him. Also if your child goes to Crocus I believe they can go to the Library for help, but not sure what time of day it is offered. You could also email a guidance counsellor for help, but I would start with the teacher.

Have found MathAntics on youtube is good " as well as Khan Academy!

There is an app that will breakdown written out problems but not word problems.  
Might not be fully helpful but will show you how to solve.  
Not sure name of app but sure can google it.

Hey! I know you said you can't afford a tutor but if you can get him to show me what he's working on I can help! I graduated from Crocus Plains last year with my grade 12 Pre-Calculus, so I'm sure I could give him a hand
