Today at 5 pm I was driving between Rosser Avenue East and Princess Avenue. Teenage girls were playing with a shopping cart. They tried to push the cart down the hill at the top of Rideu street down to Rosser avenue east. I stoped my car and told one of the girls "do not do that" because it is dangerous and it might crash into a car. Please, parents talk with your children about dangerous things that they shouldn't do... Thanks!

These kids are not the only ones. I don't recall having the shopping cart talk with my daughter. I will have to bring that up next time. Pretty much anything in life can be dangerous. Kids are kids. They will learn. Hell growing up if we passed a tire and a hill.....whoever was the one to fit in the tire.....got the ride down the hill. Shopping carts, we have all had our day. I think it was even in one of the JackAss movies.

They are kids, parents do not realistically have any control.  
 
And how the hell are they supposed to know exactly what they are doing at all times? Even if the parents saw your post if the kids wanted to do it again... they will.

think of the stupid things other generations did as teenagers. Our parents likely have a long list of stupid things they did that were unsafe.  
 
Not saying getting in shopping carts going down Rideau is okay, but it's not new. For generations youth have been doing stupid and unsafe things.

I totally understand that teens do stupid crap....but if your teen is riding in a shopping cart down a hill towards a street where cars may not see them until it’s too late....somewhere along the lines you missed out on having the “safety talk” with them lol. There’s a big difference between stupid teen behaviour and dangerous behaviour. Luckily with the snow they probably wouldn’t have gotten far I imagine though  
 
It’s all fun and games until something serious or fatal happens and then people will be asking, “why didn’t anyone stop them if they saw this happening?”

Every generation does stupid crap. We used to shove each other down hills in those old black garbages with wheels.

For you in caring about the welfare of others poster! Yes kids will be kids but if it was your kid and they did smash into a car and we’re injured everyone of you saying kids will be kids would be the first to scream bloody murder lol  
Just because you can doesn’t mean you should, and then there’s the mentality of oh well that’s makes this world crappy.

you where a teen, did you always listen to your parents or other parents when they told you to stop because something was dangerous, bet not. Not saying for parents not to tell kids/teens not to do stupid stuff, but also realise they will likely still do it.

You say “common sense people”, and for adults, maybe. Teenagers? Not so much. We were all there once, stupid decisions get made lol

Pffft...hell even as an older adult I still say to myself sometime....That was a stupid thing to do. Adults drink and drive. They jaywalk on busy streets. They don't wear lifejackets in boats. Everyone does stupid stuff, we just notice it based upon the stupidity of the event. Adults just call it different. Kids push a cart down a hill with or without them in it....stupid. Adults do the same.....you might have/or cause an accident. Lol.

You’re literally saying teens are unable to have common sense? That’s considerate of you, I’m sure they’d be thrilled to know “ adults” think they’re dense. I know more teens with more common sense than adults, so kudos to their parents.

Stupid things when we were younger. I remember bumpershining in the winter up north! We also went down hills in anything that could go down the hill with a push, we had 1 kid at the bottom watching for cars tho...LOL! I think part of growing up is doing stupid things...within reason of course. How else will kids learn that there are consequences for their actions? Not saying you need to get hurt to learn....but for the umm "thicker headed ones" sometimes getting hurt means lesson learned. I find myself telling my own child not to do things because of my own past experiences, but my child will do it anyway when I'm not looking and learn the "hard" way, so sometimes parents DO warn their kids, but the kids aren't necessarily going to listen....

a different kid. I can remember someone saying that I should try and drink a glass of water while lying down, uhh, no way! I just never tried anything that would be harmful to me. My parents taught me well, I never felt the need to do stupid sh&t to fit in with others.

Were you different or raised to be smarter than the other kids?

did a good job with me! But even now I make up my mind on what I want to do, I was never a 'sheep' who had to follow the crowd.

Kids will be kids. We all do stupid things. But it IS the parent’s responsibility to TRY to teach their children about danger, right & wrong, good & bad, and everything else that child might need to survive the hostile existence we call life. It is on the parents to continue, continue, and continue to try, try, and try, to teach their children. It is on the parents to persevere a never ending task. We will never be perfect and can never fully succeed in this endeavour. It is impossible but it is still up to the parent to try. That is part of parenting.  
 
It seems to me that today too many parents have dropped the ball here. They are “too busy”, “too tired”, indifferent, lazy, too unintelligent (YES the world does have stupid people no matter what anyone might think). I hear parents complain about the schools not doing enough of this, enough of that, teaching this, teaching that, things that should not be on the schools but on the parents. Talk to YOUR children about things that will affect their lives that have nothing to do with “book learnin’”. Let teachers teach what parents cannot. Let parents teach what they should. Or should parents now start teaching geometry, mathematics, sciences and let the teachers teach them how to cross the street, how to use the toilet, how to be polite & have respect (though this is almost lost), or how to tie their shoes?  
 
Also, let kids be kids. Kids are active. Kids are loud. Kids are rambunctious. Kids are stupid. Kids are brilliant. Kids are devious. Kids are mean. Kids are honest. Kids have innocent curiosity.  
 
STOP doping your children because YOU are too tired. It is not their fault if you have to work too much. You chose to have them. If you can’t afford them don’t have them. Don’t say “My kid has ADHD” simply because they are active children. and you want some peace & quiet. You are just diminishing the children that actually have the disease. No matter what, we, as a species, will survive the ages. Older generations will always have little tolerance for the young. The young will always feel superior to the older generations. The cycle will continue until nature finally takes it all away.

Back to the idea of the OP... try to each your children safety, especially if it relates to vehicles. No matter who is “in the wrong” the vehicle will ALWAYS win in a collision between it and a human.  
 
Several times I have been driving when children step into an intersection (without street lights) and start crossing the street when they do not have the right-of-way. There was no cross-walk or 4 way stop but rather uninterrupted movement by my vehicle.  
 
I can think of 3 occasions on 13th street & ____(?)____ where children have stepped nearly in front of my car and started to cross the street. Once I blasted the horn at them, once I screamed out and pointed at them, and once I actually had to slam on the brake so as not to hit the child. This isn’t “kids being kids” this is parents being irresponsible about teaching their children about safety & following rules.
