Talk to your kids.... thin ICE!!!
3/23/2010 at 8:56 PM
I was out for a walk with my 10 year old daughter on the paths along Kirkaldy and at the Discovery Centre this evening and to my horror, we stumbled upon three young men (couldn't have been older than about 12 or 13) playing on the river.
I'm no expert and this is the first spring that I've lived this close to the river. Having never spent time on or near water at this time of year, I can't say for certain whether the ice would be safe or not. Considering that there are 2-3 meters of open water along the shore at some spots, I think it would be safe to say that it's NOT A GOOD TIME TO BE OUT THERE!!
Please please please talk to your children about how unsafe the river is at this time of year. If you fall through, you'll just be gone... there's no coming up for air when the ice is still covering so much of the surface.
Now I just hope that the police found these young men before they got too far away. Yes, I called the authorities. I'm sure a scare from them will have far more impact than some crazy lady yelling at them, as I'm sure that's how they would have viewed my comments had I been brave enough to share them.
