The "Big Boy Bed"
5/12/2010 at 11:01 AM
About 2 months ago we moved my 2 ½ year old son into a big boy bed. At first he was totally into it. Slept pretty well, he would get up though the night sometime, but I thought that was just because of the change and we would let him come sleep in out bed the couple hours till morning or just lay there with him till he went back to sleep.
Now it seems it’s a huge fight to get him to that bed. He wants nothing to do with his it. He will scream bloody murder as soon as the words bed time come up. We have given in and just let him cuddle with us on the couch till he is half asleep and put him in his bed. Or lay with him till he falls asleep, we have also played the strict card in telling him he has to sleep in his own bed: I am just at a loss of what to do.
He sometimes brings up that it’s scary, so we put the night light closer to his bed, but he always asks us to turn it off, he doesn’t like it. And ask him what is scary, he will pick a random toy or something so we will take it out of his room, or he will just say “cuz I am scared.”
I do not want him to sleep in our bad as I know it’s a very hard habit to get out of and I am just not comfortable with it, even though my husband keeps telling me he is just a kid, let him fall asleep with us. I don’t want to give into my son every time. But I don’t know if he is really scared to sleep in his bed or he is just using it as an excuse.
I am open to anyone who may have any suggestions of what I can try, or am I just not being patient enough and should just give him time??
