Different Spiritual Beliefs

Why is it that so many parents have a hard time coping with the fact their children might not share the same spiritual beliefs as them? I am having a hard time understanding what it is that makes us want to imprint ourselves onto someone else, someone who is at such a young age and more openminded and accepting of other beliefs and possibilities than someone who is older and set in their ways.
Just because a child is born to two Christian parents that child should be expected to be baptised and Christian?
