Why is it so difficult to find affordable housing for students?

I have been searching for an affordable apartment for 6+ months, for myself, my bf and my little bro that I took under my wing so he could have better schooling here (He came from winnipeg and thats not place for a teen to grow up) and every 2 bedroom that we have looked at we got turned down because theres 3 of us?!?! for gods sakes its a 2 bedroom!!! what do they think my bf and I are going to sleep in seperate bedrooms. I am a full time student with a full time job and my bf is a more then full time employee and my little bro will have a job plus go to school. What is the big deal?
Another point I have is why is everything here like 900$ when it may be worth maybe 700$ I think the land people in this city should re think the rent value. Of course there can be beautiful apartments but come on...theres something wrong when having a mortgage is cheaper then rent.
We also need some more apartment buildings in this city for people in general!!
