painting terra cotta pots

I had bought a terra cotta pot and wanted to paint it so it would look a little nicer by my doorway, and was just wondering if there was a certain type of gloss or something to paint over it after it dries... to protect it from the elements? I'd like to use some of my card-making stamps also. If you can help me out, great!
