I am trying to figure out the math of the Brandon School Division. Reading the article in today’s paper regarding funding to the school division the extra money doesn’t add up to what is needed according to the article. They use 147 extra students at a cost of $11,000 per student would mean a cost to the division of over 1.5 million dollars needed in extra funding. I am curious to know at what point do they need more of something to increase the budget. Looking at a pdf document from the school division, they have a max of 9646 students for the division. 2015/2016 projection of students is 8475. The 2015/2016 budget is just under 92 million. If you divide 92 million by the max students it equals $9537 per student. At the budget 92 million and current student number of 8475 is $10855 per student. Why is it when we have more students the cost rises? Are current classes maxed out right now and they need to hire more teachers? At 147 extra students this year and 20 elementary schools that is less than 8 kids per school. Do schools have to hire that much more staff for these kids?

I totally agree their hiring is completely out of control

though I'm not sure it MAY have something to do with the class size caps set out by the province. I know at my daughters school they are all at capacity in the grades that are capped, and a school is allowed to have a certain % of classes over the cap by a certain # (I can't remember how many they can be over), but they are maxed out on that too, so a single student in each of those classes would mean a new teacher and new class formed for each of those grade levels as per the Provinces guidelines and class size caps.

Many of the new students are from immigrant families, it costs more to educate students who don't speak English.

There are 18 elementary schools, 3 high schools, 1 alternative high school, and 1 colony school…….just a few more than 10!!!

Don't want you to have an aneurysm so I'll rephrase my comment...it costs more to run our schools than it does to run our ENTIRE city of 50,000 people (please don't check the census and correct me, it's not super important to the point I'm trying to make)
