Was wondering if anyone can shed some light on whether or not the city purchased some kind of pothole repair machine a few years ago. I have never seen said machine in action which leads me to believe that I am mistaken and they did not. I understand that it’s likely only feasible to use it when conditions are just so if they do have one but like I said, I’ve never seen one in action on our streets.

some kind of machine. It used ground up asphalt I believe. Not sure if it is still being used.

If so, and if I'm understanding it correctly, it's not a machine you would see out and about in the streets, rather it stays in the yard mixing the "filler"

Ya, it's basically a cement mixer with a diesel burner on it. It's just an asphalt recycler with mediocre results.  
 
It's not meant to be used out on the streets and we have tried.

I think the OP is referring not to an asphalt reclaimer, but one of those trucks that pulls up to a pothole, and has an arm with a hose on the front. It sprays asphalt into the pothole to fill it, and continues on.  
Basically a more automated version of a truck with asphalt in it, with 2 guys filling potholes with shovels.

city does not have that truck, it's a contractor hired by the Province. The city does not have a "pothole machine" besides the asphalt recycler.

other thing you might see being towed is a 'hotbox'. It's a heated container that you put asphalt in to keep it at a consistent temperature. Again it does not make asphalt or fill holes by itself. It has chutes where you can shovel the product from.

I've seen these things in action on Winnipeg streets I hope to hell Brandon didn't waste tax payers dollars on this. It fills pot holes like a reverse vacuum with asphalt, they tamp it down and a week later the hole returns..if you have driven down route 90 north of Portage then you know what Im talking about.

Spray Patching works and is widely used across the USA and Canada.  
 
The problem in Manitoba is everyone is using RS-1 emulsion. Most other jurisdictions use CRS-2 which is better suited for the job when used with the correct washed aggregate.  
 
The other issue is everyone seems to use the version of the machine where the operator sits in the truck and moves the elephant trunk around from in the cab, this results in very poor workmanship. I often see them completing this work with no compaction also. When done properly an operator stands on the road and moves the elephant trunk around by hand and a second operator rakes the material around prior to rolling it.  
 
 
Also , if the city used proper application procedures when applying cold-mix to the city streets it would also not be "temporary". Cleaning the loose material out of the hole and compacting the material properly (not with the truck tire or traffic) would results in much better results. Brandon is not unique in its process of "throw and go" however many city''s do this.

Yikes.... They need to fix that corner rather quickly.

a better way of filling potholes, temporary or not.  
 
I have watched guys throw patching material in a wet hole hit it once or twice with a shovel and carry on.  
 
the next day the pot hole is back.  
 
If the hole was vacuumed out dry or water and loose material, then filled with a quality product and properly tamped and compacted would it not stay longer in the season.  
 
and why does brandon asphalted streets not seem to last as long as other cities. a year or 2 after a fresh layer we are patching  
 
have lived in Calgary that has freeze thaw all winter long and edmonton who has colder winters than we do and both have longer lasting asphalt streets than we do.  
 
so what is the difference? asphalt blend, patching material. any one know??  
 
I agree with Bean with the snorkle truck or what ever, there is no way that is going to effective when the operator never gets out of truck to inspect the job.  
 
gotta be a better more efficient method
