    For folks who bought in the last few years. What is the city assessment of your property vs what the bank says? Can you call the city and have a reassessment?

    Up 250$ on a old revenue house. Around 12% increase. Taxes fed, prov, and municipal are appalling. Cant wait for Trudeas carbon tax.

    One property is down 6.7% and the other down 11%. I'm very surprised, but I'll take the extra $800!

    you can contact the Provincial assessment office, but not sure if the conversation you have will be more about your 2020 assessment at this point versus 2018. Contact info is at http://www.gov.mb.ca/mr/contactus/assessment_contact_us.html
     
    There's some good info on the city website at the link below about the assessment process. Also further to a couple of my posts earlier this AM there are some useful charts that show more info on impact of the assessment on different properties:

    Ours are just shy of $5800 and the house is newish in a newish area. The sad thing is the taxes are almost double of previous house we lived in and the city services were a lot better and more consistent in the old area. I am going to try the appeal process and see what comes of it. Doesn't hurt to try I guess.

    wait till next year it will go up about 8% plus for new bridge and carbon taxes for city fuel and new school

    Mine went up about 15% in monetary terms $700.  
     
    Maybe the council should state the general rise in taxes and not try and hide behind ‘we have lowered the rare of taxes’

    when i bought my house it was 175 a month then went up to 202 and month now 224 a month. For what I did no renovations just moved in and lived. I just don't get it.

    When are the powers that be going to realize that living in this city and province is too costly?  
     
    We get to pay for things such as...expanding the airport three times and is there any more flights on the horizon? For city management to get up at a budget meeting and call the expansion a 'quality of life investment' is sickening! It's quality of life to be able to afford to get the hell out of this place if you have the money!  
     
    The province assessments are too high also!  
     
    Just talked to a friend who has a 5000 dollar tax bill to pay (condo)  
     
    Another who lives in downtown area 3000.  
     
    Hey and then people are going to get forgivable loans to purchase a home of their own! Here's some advice, don't buy, you won't like the tax bill you have to pay every year!

    Living in a condo with property taxes this year amounting to $3,300 for each unit not including what we pay monthly for condo fees. No wonder the city is allowing developers to build duplex style housing on one lot and multiple condo units-money grab!

    I hope folks sounding the tax alarm bells are keeping in mind that taxes in the city didn’t really go up this year. For simplicity’s sake, if yours went up personally it was basically because someone else’s went down because the re-assessment said your property needs to be responsible for a bigger piece of the pie than last year and theirs needs to be responsible for a smaller piece of the pie. But this years pie is very very close to the same size as last year’s pie. Looking at the ward by ward breakdown and the comparison of newer and older properties it seems more common that high value homes had their tax bill decrease and more common that lower value homes had their tax bills go up (But by no means can you make that as a blanket statement... plenty of exceptions!)

    I realize that the city kept their increase on the low side but where would we be if the increase was say 5%. I think the city needs to do some serious cutbacks, people cannot continue to keep forking out cash like this every year.  
     
    The province also needs to look at their assessments! 3000 tax bill for living in the downtown area?!

    Good old inflation causes everything to go up. The price of gas alone is way up from last year.  
     
    Also the Brandon Firefighters and Police always get massive salary increases every time they negotiate a new contract. They are always in the double digits. You'd be pretty hard pressed to find a cop in this city making under a $100K nowadays. And, no I am not saying they are over paid or not worth the money but these are big expenses for the City and last I checked money still wasn't growing on trees.

    I always pay in full last week in January, which means I get a 2% refund, so this year 2% paying early discount and 6% reduction.

    6.3% increase for me.  
     
    I still believe we need to adapt a user fee system. Whatever the bill is divided by amount of people to pay.

    You can't pay your taxes in January because they are not out yet. You also can't save 2%. You can receive half a percent discount if you pay by the end of May. Read the literature that came with your taxes.

    Well look at that! You can pay them 6 months in advance and save an extra 1.5%!! Not sure why anyone would. I would think if someone had a few extra thousand kicking around to pay the City 6 months in advance they would realize there are so many other ways they could make more with that money in 6 months but I stand corrected.

    Interesting that the school division portion is very near identical to the municipal portion now.

    If you feel your valuation is too high. I’ve dealt with them a few times and they seem pretty reasonable. Don’t just accept what they value your house at. Especially for houses in the core area, prices have dropped significantly. Over 20% imo  
     
    One thing I think the city should do away with is their ridiculous way of calculating taxes. Just change it to a % of the valuation, simple. Who knows though? Probably easier to up the taxes with all the different steps to calculate it lol. Harder for people to complain if they don’t understand it

    I don't understand how to City of Brandon gets what they charge each person for taxes all my neighbors in my area pay less taxes than I do some of us have almost the same size houses and yards and they still pay less than I do it just does not make sense. My Neighbor Next to Me pays almost $1,000 less than I do for the same size house the same size property so how does the city come up with these numbers in our area we never get any snow removal done on our street maybe once winter are back Lanes hardly ever get plowed it just does not make sense. out of all my neighbors on my street there is only one other neighbor that pays almost what I do for taxes here in our core area. it's not like we are living in 300 or $400,000 homes our own homes here are averaging maybe a hundred thousand and we are paying around $2,700 a year for tax. This is freaking crazy...one of my neighbors pay 990.00 a year so how is it I pay almost 3 times that. It is not far at all in my eyes.

    Assessment of houses is controlled by provincial govt. and the city has no power to change the method of collecting taxes.  
    Assessment is supposed to be based on fair market value, if you know you would never sell your house for its assessed value, call the assessment office and request an inspection.

    If you pay by the end of January, you get s full 2% discount.....tax free. Please tell me where you can invest 5000 grand no lock in and get a 2% tax free return in 6 months?
