Did anyone attend the bridge meeting today? was there a start date on construction?

I had to work today unfortunately work is a 3-11 gig. Hope things were well explained and maybe the minutes posted

You got to be kidding on a start date, they haven’t decided on the bridge they want and by the time they do and the time to design it, it will be time for another consult to see what the people would like for a bridge. And the ball just keeps rolling!

I was just asking because I overheard someone say 5 years till completion, which is a scary long time

many 'incidents' on the old bridge. Even partying which leads to fighting. There has been assaults.  
 
That's a valid point in asking about security. How are the police to attend if something criminal happens on the bridge, run up? Also what about an assault? Ambulance can't get up there!  
 
Very short-sighted for the chiefs of police and FF to not ask that question, IMHO. Or maybe they were encouraged not to ask?  
 
I don't care how well lit the new bridge will be, I wouldn't be caught dead walking it.

I knew that area of town wasn't the best but if its that bad we need bridge security maybe we are better off without a bridge?

has there been no bridge to walk on? Have people adapted to the situation? I don't really know the answer.  
 
It's too bad that there is so many bad characters, too much time on their hands, nothing to do but drink or drug and cause problems. I guess they keep our police and paramedics busy though!  
 
I don't think that people are saying that there needs to be a security guard but rather how are people going to be safe when using the bridge?

Seems very wasteful to spend millions on a foot bridge that only a handful of people will use

Well with it being only a foot bridge I don't foresee a lot of use and agree that we could put the money to a lot better projects. Given the history with that area it will be most likely used to drink, use drugs, urinate, defecate, spray paint etc. There will be fights, stabbings, robberies. The police will likely attend on a daily basis but again that is pretty standard for that area. Brandon is no different then any other city, they all have an area that attracts crime and unsavory people. During the day time I am sure it would be relatively safe. However you wouldn't catch me down there or walking across that bridge alone after dusk.

we have bike paths ...I got jumped by two guys on Victoria..between 26 and 34.. should rip up the bike path! you are stereo typing all people who live in that area...they deserve the same ability to move around the city as you do!

For those that don’t think the bridge would be used must have a vehicle and be able to go point a to b. I have a vehicle but if I could have a way not to have to add an extra 20 blocks to my walk to and from work i would. Also those thinking that people have adapted sure they have they still try crossing CN property and get fined for it and luckily city buses seem to finally be running late enough that people can get to/from work from evening and night shifts but that’s an extra cost to the City and tax payers.

Not quite. Yes, crime happens in ALL areas of the city but there is considerably more in that area. Assuming you've lived in Brandon for more than a week most people know what goes on down there. There is a reason the downtown core can't attract people to the area. I worked retail down there for years and it is nothing like what it used to be. Just check the crime statistics map.  
 
And now these people somehow unable to move around the city now?? I am pretty sure they still have the ability just like everyone else. Maybe just a little less convenient.  
 
I am assuming the City did a study on how much pedestrian traffic there is to justify millions on a pedestrian bridge. But I can't seem to find anything anyone know where this document might be??

I know everyone keeps referring to this as a pedestrian bridge, but if it also accommodates cyclist it will see a lot of use as it will be a much nicer way for people to ride from the South to the Coral Centre.

the same people that were causing trouble on the old bridge when it was closed to vehicles , from a safety from assault i feel that the old bridge was better than the new designs will prove too be.was talking with a lady today that lives in the area and she said she would not be walking over the new bridge. if the people that live there are not willing to use it why build it !

Just an idea since most taxpayers/homeowners work, try having the meetings on Sundays.

deserve a bridge to drive on! I am in no way saying that the 'problem people' who cause issues downtown are from the north end.

Ahahha yeah right... when it was there, no one used except ppl living in that area.

there are train crossings along with pedestrian crossing all over the city. Pedestrians stop when the arms come down on 1st street. Am I missing something, why do we need a pedestrian bridge?

city should set up a shuttle service to run from foot of the old bridge in north end directly to downtown bus shelter on 8th st street downtown .this should be a lot cheaper to run

Im just saying that the city is saying they are going to build this bridge .... for just walking = huge waste of tax dollars at least if they going to make a bridge make it for vehicles also. Truly no we do not need this bridge either way !!

If they are looking for services. Probably easier and more available at the Corral centre. Foot bridge across the river already there

They should build the bridge. There’s lots of people trespassing now on CP Rail property which is not only dangerous, but also illegal. But I guess it keeps the CP Police busy. But as far as I’m concerned CP Rail should cover half of the cost of building the bridge. But that would probably never happen.

Total waste of money, but that is what Politicians do best.

Of course CP won't pay for half of the bridge. They were here first. Plus, there was already a bridge there that they had nothing to with in terms of the decision to demolish. The only reason the city is building a new bridge is because CP has put up a fence along the north side of the tracks. I'm sure the city would be just fine with people walking across the tracks.
