I think my bbq propane tank might be expired. Can I use it for exchange? Best place to go? Cost?

If it is more than 10 years old then no you can’t exchange it. There is a date stamped into the collar of the tank if it reads older than 0608 it is too old and would need to recertified. Costs about $30 ish. You can buy a 20 lb tank at Canadian Tire for $35ish

of all my old propane tanks and gotten trader tanks. there aren't many places that fill tanks compared to the number of places that take tanks on trade. About $50-$55 to get a tank and then competitive prices to trade. I've found Wal Mart the cheapest and gas bars the most expensive to trade.

What do they charge to swap your empty tank for a new one?

Most are around $25 I believe

Most trader tanks aren't filled to 20lbs, which is why the prices look cheap and/or competitive. Filling a tank is generally cheaper.

Most bbq tanks weigh about 18.2-18.6 lbs. they are then filled with 20lbs of propane. This is considered 80% of total volume. This allows for expansion. Places that actually fill your tank have certified scales. They certainly do put 20 lbs of propane in. You can even watch the attendant. If you take your trader tank home and weight it in a bathroom scale you can verify wether the traders are ripping you off. The tank should be about 38 ish lbs. if it is way lower contact them and complain simple.

the trader tanks only have 8 kg of propane which is 17.62 lbs. It is clearly marked on the cage they are stored in as well as the tank label, so there should be no surprise

Tank traders is more for convenience then anything. It's never been the best deal. I guess if you're in a hurry and can't wait 5 minutes it's easy to pay a little more, grab and go. Costco in Winnipeg is the best deal but definitely not the most convenient, especially if you only have 1 tank.
