And it came from my own cell phone number!!??

A friend of mine with Bell mobility got such a note on his phone claiming to be from Bell. Yeah, it's a scam.  
 
When it's easy enough to take a shot in the dark and likely hit a few thousand fish (eg. Finding bell customers on a bell assigned prefix, or finding MB hydro customers in the 204 area code), it's best to approach all such texts with suspicion.  
 
Another trick that is particularly related to online ads for pricey items. . . phone calls only. PERIOD.  
 
I've seen someone waste 3 apparently international texts responding to what turned out to be a bogus offer. Waste, as in pay $0.60 each.  
 
If their digits and area code and off and they won't call, then it's not worth it.

It's easy enough to spoof such these days. Why I tend to not trust anything unless it's from a short code.  
 
And even then, it's worth questioning. If MB hydro (or whatever) hasen't contacted me this way before, why are they now?

If you ever get a credit on a bill it will just show up on your next bill. They will never pay you outright
