If that is indeed the case they should make their employers aware of it, she did not in any way make it known I could go through a cashier and it definately did not appear in ANY way that this was an option.... but I'm glad to know it now and I will insist on it next time. I think this is a joke! Self check-outs are the future. I think its funny how all the old people are acting like its the end of the world. I'm 20 and if there weren't self checkouts I would go insane having to wait for everyones "small talk". I ALWAYS use self checkout

Used to be excellent. Since the most recent change in their self checkouts they are not so good. Before a big order could have bags moved from bagging area to floor or cart. Now it has to go on the shelf and stay there. The machine protests when you put a bag on the shelf. The scanner is SLOW, and I mean SLOW.  
 
I have not used the ones at Shoppers-i simply have not been to Shoppers.

Shoppers doesn’t have the selection and prices to not accept cash. I love self checkouts but I went to shoppers on the weekend for 2 12 packs of water, $3.50 total why would I use my debt card. If you have self checkouts be like Home Depot and Sobeys and accept cash too

I love self checkouts. They are fast.  
However I hate Shoppers Drug Mart. It's expensive there.

wahhhh! I can't believe how whiners are there about this topic...get over it things aren't going to change..when companies have to pay employees high wages and half the time the don't show or call in "sick" every second day...who can blame them? Every store is now getting them sooner or later. Simple solution? Boycotting? That doesn't work. So don't shop there, do you think they care?

anytime I have gone and wanted to pay cash or have a lot of items. There is usually a bell to ring for a cashier to come. Or if not I just ask an employee that I need a cashier.

I use self check out if I am paying debit with few items. Otherwise I use the cashier.

A quick search says they had a revenue of $3.17 billions for the fourth quarter of 2018. That is up from the year before.  
 
I can deal with self check outs if it is expensive or worth my while to use my debit card.  
 
I always have a bit of cash, and often run there for one thing I forget. I refuse to use my debit for a $5 item.  
 
Or, tell them you are paying cash and when you get to the till and your items are rung up - oops sorry, don't have that much cash, will have to use debit.  
 
I am sure the younger generation will have no problem using self check outs. What about the older generation? It will be a hassle for those older folk, that are not into all this new technology. I feel for them.

How old are you talking I’ve seen older men and ladies use self checkouts .

I remember the same type of whining about self-serve gas pumps, ATM’s and debit cards and how people were going to resist the trends in order to restore things to ‘how they’re ‘sposed to be”. How did that work out ?  
 
Let’s be thankful that some people are forward thinking and willing to accept change.  
 
Such horrible burdens these first world problems.

like to pump my own gas, it's been probably 20 years since I used a ATM, it spit out a extra twenty which I returned to my bank the next day they were opened.  
As for debit? Don't use it either, my choice.  
 
If that means I'm not forward thinking I don't care!  
 
Can you imagine the hue and cry if the city had the ability to clean the streets of snow without using (wo)man power? What about the possibility of phasing out firefighters and police? Those jobs pay more than cashiers and contribute to our economy more than minimum wage jobs. Then people will sit up and notice!

I went last night , not one till open, all had a sign saying closed. Only option was self service, so the store saying there is always the option of both is wrong. There was also nobody up front at the store , expect customers .

So no lotto sales then either or was that self-serve also?  
 
After seeing this thread, I'll stick with the south end store.

I wonder how the employee's feel about this?  
 
I would much rather be busy, than standing around, telling people to use self checkout.  
 
Wandering around the front, in case they are needed - not what I would want to do.

I dont understand why everyone is crabby and hostile towards self checkouts. they are faster because you arent slowed down waiting for someone to scan your stuff. They are simple to use as well, you hit 2-3 buttons and it shows you what to do. Im not there to make friends with a cashier. im there to get what I want and leave as fast as possible. They are the future and it is a fresh alternative to an old outdated system.

self check outs for a variety of reasons. They take jobs away, don't say that they don't.  
I don't want to use a debit card every time I make a purchase, I use cash, it's super simple to keep track of. If your wallet is empty, you're broke  
I like human interaction One thing that grinds my gears is seeing friends sitting having coffee together but everyone is on their phone texting or checking the latest news! When computers became popular the art of 'letter writing' disappeared, is the art of conversing with other human beings going too?

Think it's just being used as an excuse to justify why they don't like the self-checkouts.  
 
The employees are more than likely moved to other departments, cross trained or not being hired to be cashiers. At many of the places with self-checkout, there's likely a high turnover rate as well. They need employees to gather the items for everyone who orders online and to take the stuff out to peoples vehicles at Walmart though.  
 
People were quiet when photo department staff got reduce because of digital cameras. Now if you want pictures printed from your digital camera, you can use the self-serve photo machines and get them printed right from the machine. The photo staff are really only there for assistance and maybe the odd 1hr film development.
