So there are 2 no parking signs on my block. 1 of them is in front of the first house at the corner, and the 2nd is only 2 houses down. There are signs on the other side of the street too in identical placements. Should I assume the parking ban is for the whole block? I normally park on the street but don't want to get towed tomorrow morning. But I find it weird that the rest of the block doesn't have any, and parking a couple blocks away and walking with a toddler is a bit difficult.

That seems odd.  
Usually the no parking signs have arrows showing where the no parking area is.  
Sometimes 2 arrows meaning both ways and sometimes 1 arrow showing the specific area.  
Do the signs you're referring to have 2 arrows?

They did have arrows pointing both ways. I think they're trimming trees. I talked to one worker who said I was fine where I was parked, but then a guy driving a truck was waiting for me to move my car when we were going to daycare. They ended up taking over about half the block so I don't know why they didn't spread the signs out.

I definitely wouldn't park on the street if those signs are up but only in a few places.  
 
You say tree trimming but sometimes the city puts those up during snow clearing as well.  
 
Either way, best to try to find some where else to park for the time being even if it may be a slight inconvenience.

Better to walk a bit then have a tree limb fall on your car or you and your child.  
 
Or having the snow plow hit your car.  
 
Or having your car towed which is really expensive as there is the ticket as well.
