It is difficult when we pay our taxes but we will all soon become additionally financially responsible for disposal of all of our waste. We are all producing too much waste and we are running out of places to get rid of it. Land fills are filling fast. In time we will have to change the way that we all live and reduce the waste that we each produce, or pay for disposal.

I get your point FarmerGeorge but I believe a fee for wood or any material that can be repurposed seems silly. all that is going to do is cause more people to start disposing of this stuff in other ways.  
 
Concrete at the dump has no charge to be disposed of.

- Cut it down so it fits in a bag and put it in the bin  
 
- Put it on eBrandon for free pick up to anyone who needs short pieces of treated lumber  
 
- Go back to the dump and pay the $5 and apologize to the person in the scale who you were probably rude to (Don't know if you were but I've spent a lot of time idling behind people who felt their taxes entitled them to take a strip off the scale operator for one reason or another)  
 
- Leave it out in the yard if you want a visit from municipal bylaw officers and get a fine a lot higher than $5  
 
The $5 fee for wood and tree waste has been in place since at least the beginning of this year. Contact your city councillor , other council members, and the mayor too, and let them know how you feel. All changes to city fees including landfill fees require their approval and they are certainly more responsible for it than whomever you spoke to at the landfill or on the phone.

A $5 fee does not seem like a big deal to me. Personnel and machines are required to move the wood that is discarded. Then more machines and personnel are required to sort and grind it. It is just another fee for service.  
 
I have taken about a half dozen large loads of renovation debris I n the past year. Paying a $5 fee seems like a much better idea than creating more pollution by burning.

Peoples memories are short. Years ago, the dump came up with fees to accept refrigerators that hadn't had the refrigerant removed. The ditches and alleys were strewn with old refrigerators. The gate fee was removed and I'm sure was added in somewhere on our taxes. That's a far easier pill to swallow than getting hit at the gate. With this fee that is now charged at the gate, I'm sure there's a lot more waste being diverted to alternative locations as well. Just human nature.

Keep in mind the dump fees increase dependent on load weight. $5 is for up to 250kg. 250-500kg is $20. And over 500kg is another story.  
I had two large truck loads to go and rather than making two trips, took my truck and utility trailer together. I was rewarded with a $35.00 dump charge whereas two trips with the truck would have been $10.00. Live and learn!

I am in the rm of cornwallis and as of 2021 we pay 60 dollars to dump

charging dumping fees and other fees are quite common. And $5 is on the cheap side of the scale.

Last time I went to the dump (Been a few months, things might have changed) there was no fee for concrete, but if you are a non-resident you would still probably be charged at least the $10 non-resident entry fee.

From talking with staff there, the Cornwallis deal was stopped because people who live in that area were dumping commercial loads from their businesses and the RM was on the hook to pay for it. As usual a handful of selfish jerks ruined it for everyone.

are many landfills that charge just to enter, no matter what you have, including yard waste like branches. And for many of them, you wish they only charged $5. Calgary for example $25 minimum for less than 250kg. Steinbach charges $10. To dump yard waste in Red Deer they charge $7. These are just a few and can be looked up online.  
 
My point is that landfills charging to dump is not uncommon. Most have a minimum fee. There are some that don't charge as well. Brandon is not unique in this respect. From what I see Brandon is on the low end of what's charged.

This is what happens when people don't want to pay at the landfill. This is 49th Street East by Brandon Terminal and Westman Salvage. I contacted the sanitation department so I hope they come out and remove it. This is not the first time people have dumped here. There was a mess last year that was left by someone along here , which was retrieved by the sanitation dept.

I personally would rather see the charge at the dump than on our taxes. Not everyone uses the dump on top of garbage pickup. I’ve lived here for 11 years and have never needed to go to the dump so I don’t want to pay extra just because some people don’t want to pay to use a service they need.  
 
$5 seems very reasonable to me though
