JustOneMoreDay said "My family has been hit too. The testing worries me a bit though. The first symptomatic person tested negative on a PCR test. Three days later, two of us tested positive. The other three people in my house tested negative. Everybody is sick and has the same symptoms. Obviously, we are all isolating for our ten days but it concerns me that we are getting some negative test results with the same symptoms. "
You've done the right thing.
I could go into a whole big rant about testing (I won't), but it's important for everyone to consider a few things:
1. Testing is imperfect. The potential for false negatives is high, which is why you should isolate even if you have a negative test and are still having symptoms.
2. The test is only as good as the sample you get and how much virus is in your sample. If you test too early or too late, there won't be enough virus for the test to detect. If you collect the sample suboptimally, there won't be enough virus for the test to detect.
With omicron, it sounds like the virus collects in the respiratory system differently than previous versions, which is attributing to it being probably milder (good), but might also be interfering with sample collection (bad).
The amount of virus in your system is basically a bell curve, with the tests only able to detect above a certain point. If you are below that magic threshold line, the test will show negative.
3. The US FDA has recently put out guidance that states that some versions of the rapid tests don't work at all vs omicron, and others have reduced sensitivity. It also suggests that some brands of rapid pcr kits are effected. I don't know if this impacts us here in MB in terms of the brands being used, but it's something to keep in the back of the brain.
In short, the current guidance as of 24/12 is to assume if you have symptoms to assume you have Covid. If you are under 40, vaccinated, and otherwise healthy, the suggestion is to not bother with testing presently and just follow the isolation requirements.
Stay safe and healthy everyone.
