Electric scooters in Bdn
4/9/2009 at 3:17 PM
Just a note I thought I'd better throw out there regarding the trend towards electric scooters and what will no doubt be growing numbers around the city.
As some may know, A & L Get Active is now selling electric scooters that in the eyes of the law are the equivalent of electric bicycles but actually look a lot like a moped. They max out at 32 km/hr, are unbelievably cheap to power (10 cents per 60 km) and have optional pedals so that their rider can choose to use them if they'd like.
The reason I'm bringing this up is that I purchased one the other day and have been riding it around the city. It's a blast to ride, be it on bike paths or city streets... but at times for a block or two when no bike path is available one has to cruise as close to the curb/shoulder of the road as possible (not on a major congested arterly like 18th St or Victoria of course) as bylaw indicates since they are not sidewalk-legal.
Some of the times I've been cruising on the shoulder, there have been cars behind me that have felt the need to drive slowly behind in stead of pass (when there's plenty of room) and I just wanted to try to get the word out there for myself and other electric-scooterers... please feel free to drive around, these things are completely stable and safe and don't want to hold up traffic!
Happy driving!
