Hiring Status at Wal-Mart?

I was wondering if anyone had any clue about the job hiring at Wal-Mart? I was recently laid off from work because there weren't enough hours to go around at my job and I was the last hired, so..first fired. I applied at Wal-Mart because they were posting in the classifieds, and even the lady I talked to at customer service when I picked up the application said the situation was pretty dire. I'm in my early 20's and my resume is decent, not perfect I'll be the first to admit since I did take a couple of years off and now regret it since it's hard to explain away to a potential boss, even if it was just a break after high-school. Basically, I haven't received a phone-call back and it's been roughly a week and I'm really starting to worry. Am I really that undesirable or have they just filled all the cashier jobs? Are there any other places you know of that are hiring capable young people with a high school education?
I understand the situation with the current economy and have taken that into account, but it's stressful. I am a provider of income in my family and the last few weeks have been incredibly stressful and depressing. I make sure not to let it show when I apply for a job and am always friendly and polite, but am really scared at this point. Thanks ahead of time for your input and consideration.
