Walking in Brandon

Hey Guys,
I moved here to Brandon from Winnipeg. In Winnipeg I never walk at night since whenever I do some random people pops out and asks me for a spare change, bus ticket or is just getting "friendly". All in all, I do not feel safe walking in Winnipeg especially in downtown.
Now that it's summer, I thought of ditching the car and just walk my way around. Is it safe here in Brandon?
