What To Do?! Eviction Notice.

Hello: my partner and I are trying hard not to fall into a downward spiral of stress. LONG story short…
We live in an apartment block west of the city that’s owned by a Winnipeg company: they basically took over the old management that was here when we moved in little more than a year ago. Since then, we went though 3 landlords on site, and two caretakers. The new management decided that it would be something of an incentive to pay rent on time by adding late fees, if one couldn’t pay on time.
That being said—my partner and I couldn’t always make it because of bills, his current salary and the part-time job I had: It’s not as if I didn’t try to get a full-time job because for the past couple of months I tried—ANYTHING, that was full-time and available, I was up for it. When it came to interview time, I went in, and yet was still passed on. AND it’s maddening when you see that after the ad goes down, another same ad starts up… grr.
SO! Left the part-time job thinking I had one lined up—but that failed, so then it was just my partner supporting us for a month. We were behind on rent by two months (we pay 645), and had to explain to the landlord on site our dilemma. She seemed very understanding, and we managed to cut that bill down by 400, so now we only owe 500. This was a week ago.
AND a week ago, I finally got my full-time job, notified the landlord and thought everything would be alright. We both came home yesterday after work (Friday) to find an eviction notice telling us that we had the weekend to get out.
Can they do this? Really?! We haven’t had complaints about us: we don’t drink or do drugs: we have no pets or children and it took us a looong time to finally get the furniture that we wanted for our ‘home’. My partner thinks that the reason why they did this was to get our damage deposit and that by giving notice on a Friday afternoon was to prevent us from going to Rental Tenancy Board.
As soon as we read the letter of eviction, we were on the newspaper and online to find a place Immediately. AND IT JUST CAN’T BE DONE, because every place we’ve tried will only take applications for the 1st of October.
We’re extremely stressed out and already packing. Is there anything that we can do to prolong our stay until the 1st of October? With no money in our pockets, we have no way to put anything in storage or have family members help out, and afraid to become homeless. Really, what to do?!
