Magnet stuck to a lamp post??? (near Tim Horton's on Vic.)

So our family was going through the drive-through at Tim Horton's on Saturday afternoon (some time between 2 and 2:30ish?). I noticed a man who was parked in the Guild Insurance lot, get out of his van, and walk toward the sidewalk that runs along Victoria Ave. I was curious as to why he might be heading that way, as the only thing across the street was the clinic, and I wasn't sure why someone would park where he did, when there was clearly plenty of parking over at the clinic.
I mentioned this to my spouse, and we both watched for a moment. The man stopped briefly on the sidewalk, bent down and fiddled with his one shoe for a second, and then proceeded to walk up to the lamp post with the crosswalk sign on it. He reached up behind the sign, and it looked like he stuck something up there between the sign and the post). He then turned around, went back to his van, and off he went.
Now we were both wondering what this was all about, and I actually made note of his license plate number at the time, just in case it turned out to be anything serious. As we left the drive-through, we sort of decided we'd leave it alone, but then our curiosity got the better of us, and we decided to head back and check it out.
We ended up driving around south on Mcdiarmid, back up 34th, down Vic, and into Guild. My spouse got out of the car, and went up and had a look. It took a minute to actually see that there was anything up there, and all they found was a magnet stuck to the post. Not a magnet with anything on it at all, just a magnet. We left it there, and off we went, wondering what the heck it was all about.
Now I understand that in the time we drove around the few blocks before we got back there, maybe someone else could have come along and found whatever was stuck there (if there even was something stuck there - maybe it was just the magnet??). Either way though, we just thought it was rather odd and I'm left wondering if anyone else saw this, or if anyone has any ideas as to what it was all about? Also seemed strange that it was during the middle of the day, and at a very busy spot in town. If it was supposed to be secretive at all, I would think that would be the last time and place you'd want to do it. lol, and yes, I'm sure we looked rather odd coming along a few minutes later and doing much the same thing!
ANYWAY, thought I'd share, and see what others think!
