Stop signs: what do you think of this

While driving down city streets, or highway even, and wonder if the car that is coming up to the stop sign is really going to stop? Why do people have to come so fast up to the stop sign and the hammer on the brakes? You hear of so many broad side accidents, it scares me sometimes.
