Unpleasant experience with city police.

I'm not sure if this is common practice but it seemed to me that the officer was a little jumpy. I didn't come to a complete stop at a stop sign and was seen by a police officer. He followed me to my house which was only a block away and I didn't even notice him. He didn't start his siren, he just followed me with his lights on. When I pulled into my driveway I noticed him pull up behind me. As I started to exit my van he jumped out and put his hand on his gun and told me to get back into my vehicle. I understand I broke the law and will have to pay for it but what would make him think that a man and his child in a family van pulling into an average west end home is going to do something???? I also understand that they are in harms way and have to protect themselves but that seemed like a little much. It's not like we're in New York or something. Any comments?
