Charges as a result of Oct prison riot

An update from today's BPS releases on charges that have come about after the investigation into the October 4/09 prison riot

On October 4th, 2009, 27 inmates at Brandon Correctional Centre were reportedly involved in an uprising that required the correctional emergency response team and a negotiation team, along with assistance from Brandon Police Service, to be successfully brought under control. As a result of a lengthy investigation and subsequent Crown counsel review, 6 inmates of the facility will be charged initially in relation to the incident and are to appear in court this morning. 5 of the men, ages 19, 19, 20, 20, and 26, are all to be charged with rioting, failure to disperse and escaping lawful custody. A 23 year old man is to be charged with assaulting a peace officer, assault with a weapon and intimidation of a justice system participant. The investigation is continuing with more suspects facing charges in the future.
