"Local Business vs Franchise"
3/2/2010 at 9:36 PM
The thread on Forbidden Flavors and the new one about Tims has me kind of irked.
People talking about Tims, Bulk Barn etc and people supporting those while "local businesses" fail.
I don't understand the argument. Bulk Barn, franchised to local owners, Tim Hortons, franchised to local owners.
Why look down on these people? They chose to put up a phenomenal financial risk to open the stores, they work incredibly hard at their business, as well as in the community.
What percentage of the people complaining about these things have ate at the Keg over Moms Steakhouse/Beef and Barrel? Shopped at Wal-Mart/Safeway/Sobeys?
The fact is, business is a competitive environment. Is it the Tims franchisees or Bulk Barns franchisees fault they have a superior business plan and marketing strategy over the local startups?
How many businesses do you think Wal-Mart put out of business locally or at the very least damaged?
These franchises aren't cheap either. What do you think a Tims costs to start up? What do you think the operating margins are?
How much harder is it to staff and operate a store with 50 employees as opposed to the smaller ones in Brandon?
