Frustrating article
4/3/2010 at 3:03 PM
I just finished reading an article in the BSun in the opinion section that has left me a bit angered and confused. Especially the caption under the picture.
It pretty much stated that the picture shown (of the woman attempting her life at the bridge) would normally not be shown in the BSun. But I have seen much worse. For example:
-A family grieving at a funeral of a fallen soldier.
-The young man who was stabbed and dying on a gurney.
Both pictures were full color and splashed across the front page.
I also recall a picture of the place where a suicide was committed.
Yes, I understand the first two examples were not suicides, but it would still be extremely difficult for family and friends to walk by the picture in a grocery store.
The article goes on to say that mentally stable or angry people want the attention that public suicides entail. I do not think this is the case. I honestly believe that a public suicide is the last call for help. That they have no where else to turn and they hope that someone will be able to help them.
And I don't think they're all mentally unstable or angry. Some are just at the end with no where else to turn. They may have no friends or family around to help them cope and go to this last resort hoping for the help they know they need.
Okay. Rant over. No idea if this thread will survive or not, but I needed to get it off my chest.
