Why?

Why are we waiting until grade nine to improve our children's reading? Why are so many students going through the education industry, illiterate?
We should really read the curriculum to find out how it values reading. Our present education system is like modern industry. Sure, productivity is up, but the quality of students (the product) has gone down drastically.
Children should be held back a grade if they can't read. However, most teachers will just pass an illiterate student, regardless of how behind they are, and leave it up to the next teacher to (hopefully) fix. All in the name of productivity.
Concerned parents should really be channeling their energy at the government. You should ask: Why is the curriculum failing to teach our children to read? Is the government doing anything naughty, like deliberately making our children ignorant and stupid?
Why crack down on a volunteer group, because the education system failed your kids? Also, why rely on a volunteer group to teach your kids?
Parents: Demand the government to improve the curriculum, and hold you children back if they can't read. Parents with young children should read to them constantly. Get them reading before kindergarden!
