dvd to divx backups

I want to copy about 300 of my dvd's to my computer so i put them away and just use my computer to play movies. i want to keep the orginal disc in the best shape as i can since i have a 8 year old that likes to play movies but never puts the discs away or ends up scratching or breaking them. i would like a fast and FREE program to cop them to my computer. does anyone know what i can use. thanks
